Helping hands

Taking place on October 24 at The Village of Rochester Hills, this is the fifth year for the 5K event that raises funds for the Rochester Area Neighborhood House. The event's motto is "put hunger on the run" and that's exactly what it has done, raising over $70,000 for the Neighborhood House to provide food, clothing and emergency financial assistance to neighbors in need.redrunners2014

"We like to say it is truly neighbors helping neighbors, with 90 percent of our funds coming from the community and 100 percent of our funds staying here," said Michelle Zelazny, Fund Development Manager of The Rochester Area Neighborhood House.

One recent example of the Neighborhood House at work is a young woman that returned home from serving in the military. She was interviewing with an automotive company but the hiring process was taking longer than she had planned for. On the verge of becoming homeless with her young son, she turned to the Neighborhood House. They were able to assist her with rent until she was hired, allowing her and her son to stay in their home until she was back on her feet and financially independent again.

"When people hit some kind of emergency, we help them," Zelazny said. "Education is a big part of what we do," Zelazny added, describing programs in place for long-term problems, like Financial Focus that works with families to help them learn how to manage their finances more effectively and become self sustaining.

The Neighborhood House also helps clients find jobs and provides counseling. These services were used by a local family when the self-employed husband stopped working to care for his wife, who was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. He came to the Neighborhood House with an eviction notice that would put his entire family, including three children, out on the streets. The Neighborhood House reached out to the landlord, advocating for the family so they were not evicted. They also provided emotional counseling when the wife passed away and helped the husband find a new job.

Healthy choice

The heart of the Scare Away Hunger event is the 5K, which can be walked or run, and is chip-timed.  The race begins and ends at The Village of Rochester Hills, the first time the event is being held at this location. When Lululemon Athletica opened this July, nearly every mom in town wanted to know, "Will there be an ivivva section in the store?"

Ivivva is Lululemon's sister line with similar intention but designed especially for girl sizes 4 -14.

photo1

While the store does not have a girls' section, they will be hosting an ivivva Truck Show on Friday, September 18 from 5-8 p.m. The show will be held at Festival Park, weather permitting, or inside the Lululemon store, if needed.

According New Store Opening Manager, Allie Howard, both summer product and the new fall line will be available at the show.

"This is a tester for those that haven't been to an ivivva store," Allie said. "It's a way to get people excited about the brand."

But, and here's the important part, quantities are limited so if you or your mini have your hearts set on a particular item, get there early.

And remember, excitement matters! If you'd like to see more ivivva trunk shows at the Village, a successful first one is the step in the right direction.

For the moms

Of course Lululemon will be open for shopping during the Trunk Show and Allie is especially pleased with what's new in pants.

"Lululemon just redid their whole pants collection," Allie explained.

Her favorites include the Align Pant made for yoga with buttery-soft Nulu fabric and the Tight Stuff Tight with compressive Luxtreme fabric made for running and cross fit training.

The Trunk Show is the perfect time to check them out as well as see what ivivva offers.

"It's like the ivivva store coming to you!" Allie said.

And it doesn't get any more convenient than that!

It is back to school time and whether you are excited, nervous or plain old sad...the Village wants to add some fun to the end of summer.

backtoschoolchalkboardThe 2015-16 school year will be off to a great start with amazing supplies from the stores at the Village. Whether you are headed to GAPClaire's, Moosejaw, Paper Source, Bath & Body Works Whole Foods Market or Lululemon - you can fill your backpack with some unique "stuff."

This year we are going to be giving four pre-filled backpacks away to our fans! We wanted to get our community "pumped up" for the chance to win! We love giving away products to our community! And we like having a little healthy competition.

It is simple. backtoschoolgirlchalkboard

Behind a big red wall perhaps the hottest store to hit Rochester Hills is preparing to open.

Are you ready for Lululemon? Because Lululemon is ready for you, Rochester Hills!

A little history-- and how did they get that name?

Lululemon was founded in Vancouver, BC in 1998 by a man. Chip Wilson discovered a love of yoga, but after 20 years in the surf, skate and snowboard business he was not so impressed by its cotton clothing options. He brought technical athletic fabric to the yoga wear table and launched Lululemon.  Its first location shared space in a yoga studio. Now there are Lululemon stores all around the world selling yoga-inspired athletic apparel.

(Fun Fact: The name and logo were chosen in a survey of 100 people.)

Down to the local nitty-gritty

New Store Opening Manager, Allie Howard, moved to Michigan from California three years ago to attend graduate school at Wayne State University. While studying business she wrote her thesis on Lululemon! I guess some things were meant to be!

alliejumping

While attending school she got a part-time job at Lululemon's Somerset Collection location. As she moved up and heard about the Rochester Hills location opening, she knew it would be a perfect fit. "I get to take what I loved from business school and my strengths as an athlete and put them together," Allie explained. We had the chance to sit down with Allie to get a sneak peek behind the scenes. This is what she had to share:

What does a first-time Lululemon shopper need to know?

This is not going to be your normal shopping experience.  We personalize it--my team will treat guests as if they are walking into our own homes. And we like to share-- whether it's about our clothes, our culture or our community events--you will learn something by coming in.

What does a die-hard Lululemon fanatic need to know about the Rochester Hills store?

This store was specifically designed for the Rochester Hills community, it's a reflection of who Rochester Hills residents are. Our team is awesome-- driven and super excited to share our culture and products with Rochester.

What product do you predict will be top sellers in Rochester Hills?

This is an outdoorsy, athletic-minded community so anything people are excited to sweat in! (Laughs)

For the women, definitely product that is sexy and athletic, like the Free To Be Wild sports bra, the Run: Speed Short and the High Time PantFor men, the Metal Vent Tech T's are great.

Everyone wants to know…. how do you become an Ambassador?!

The Ambassador is an extension of our team and a direct reflection of myself. The selection process is very organic. It basically starts where I like to work out. It's the teachers and instructors that I form authentic relationship with. They act as an arm that can reach farther than we can at strictly a store level.

So that leads to…. where do you like to work out?

I came up to CrossFit Maven on South Street before I even lived here. I would make the drive to workout there! I also work out at Yoga Shelter Rochester HIlls, Intentional Yoga and Xtend Barre. I'm excited for Pure Barre Studio to open its Rochester location.

Finally, tell me about the decor. People are excited to get a look at this store!

ironwork

This is very different than any Lululemon you've ever walked into! A lot have bright colored walls but our color is going to mainly come from the product. Rochester Hills is a farm-to-table type of city, industrial but rustic with a touch of glamour. Our decor shows that with our rustic textiles and industrial paint colors. There's also one big surprise I'm excited for everyone to see!
